A Story of Baking, Belonging, and Beginning Again
Welcome to Marigold Harbor, where the ovens are warm, the windows open toward the sea, and healing often begins with something simple, like bread, tea, and quiet companionship.
The Calendula Kitchen is a gentle coastal story about finding your way back to yourself, one quiet day at a time.
The Story
After leaving a life that no longer felt like her own, Sylvia Smallwood arrives in the quiet coastal town of Marigold Harbor with little more than her baking tools, her grandmothers bakery she inherited, and a hope for something gentler.
As the town begins to gather around her kitchen, Sylvia discovers:
• A farmer growing calendula just outside town
• A community quietly needing connection
• A life that grows slowly, but deeply
• And a gentle romance that unfolds with time

This is a story about:
• Beginning again
• Quiet relationships
• Simple food as comfort
• Gentle healing
• The warmth of belonging
The Heart of the Story
Calendula is the heart of Marigold Harbor.
Bright, resilient, and quietly healing, calendula represents:
• Gentle strength
• New beginnings
• Warmth and comfort
• Everyday healing
• Light in simple moments
Just like Sylvia’s kitchen, calendula reminds us that healing does not always arrive loudly.
Sometimes it arrives in:
• A loaf of bread
• A warm cup of tea
• A quiet conversation
• A shared meal

Why I Wrote The Calendula Kitchen
I wrote The Calendula Kitchen because I believe in gentle stories, and this story was actually inspired by one of my daughters, who loves to decorate the birthday cakes of her little girls with pretty edible flowers. She got me thinking, what about a bakery who uses calendula flowers in everything? And voila! You have The Calendula Kitchen.
It is a story where healing happens slowly, relationships bloom quietly, life is simple, and the small things really do matter.
Calendula has always represented warmth, resilience, and everyday healing to me. It is one of my main ingredients in most every salve I make for skin. It is my favorite herb to grow and work with. It is truly beautiful in every way.

A Letter to My Readers
Dear Reader,
Thank you for spending time in Marigold Harbor.
Some stories arrive quietly. They don’t demand attention, they simply unfold, gently and steadily, much like the lives they reflect. The Calendula Kitchen was one of those stories for me.
I wrote this book because I believe in gentle beginnings.
I believe in small kitchens that become gathering places.
In slow mornings filled with warm bread and soft light.
In relationships that grow through shared work and quiet understanding.
This story came from a longing to write something comforting, something that felt like sitting down in a warm kitchen after a long day, where nothing needs to be rushed, and everything unfolds in its own time.
Calendula became the heart of this story.
Calendula has always felt like a hopeful flower to me. Its bright golden petals bring warmth, even on quiet days. It’s known for gentle healing, soothing, and restoration, and that felt like exactly what Sylvia’s journey needed to be.
Calendula doesn’t demand attention.
It simply grows.
Steady. Warm. Reliable.
That is what I wanted this story to feel like.
Sylvia herself was inspired by someone very close to me, my daughter. She has always loved to decorate her baking with edible flowers and herbs, bringing beauty into something already warm and comforting. I have seen her carefully place petals on cakes and breads, turning simple baking into something thoughtful and meaningful, and absolutely beautiful.
That quiet creativity, that gentle care, became part of Sylvia.
The idea of someone building a kitchen filled not only with food, but with warmth, calm, and beauty, grew from those moments. Watching my daughter create in that way reminded me how something small, a flower, a loaf of bread, a quiet gesture, can transform a space.
And that became the heart of The Calendula Kitchen.
Sylvia’s journey is about beginning again.
About building something slowly.
About finding belonging in unexpected places.

It is also about the quiet courage it takes to keep going, even when you aren’t sure where the path will lead.
I hope this story offered you warmth. I hope it gave you a quiet place to rest.
And I hope, in some small way, it reminded you that sometimes the most meaningful things in life grow slowly, like calendula in warm sunlight, or bread rising gently in a quiet kitchen.
Thank you for reading.
With warmth,
Davilyn Atwood
